This seems contrary to D.C. v. Heller (2008), but maybe it is compatible. I will work on a more formal argument, but possibly the Court erred in regards to the connection to service, and this aspect of that verdict is a sneak attack on the equivalence of the People with the government. Possibly D.C. v. Heller does not preclude associating arms with government militia service, it only says that the natural right comes first, irrespective of additional responsibilities in a free state.

Everyone has a right to bear arms for self-defense, according to DC v. Heller. That is not opposed to this view, it complements it. The natural right is the same as it would be in a state of nature.

The Constitution outlines that we do not live in a state of nature, but in a "free state." Living in a free state entails additional responsibilities not found in a state of nature, such as safely disposing of your garbage, feeding your children and forming a well-regulated militia to defend common security. Again, "militia" means the common people form the state militia, not independent militia-- there is no separation between the people and the state in a "free state."

In a free state, everyone has the same natural right of self-defense as in a state of nature, but also additional obligations to defend the common welfare.

The Court's opinion said that everyone had the right to have a gun for self-defense irrespective of service in state militia. I argue the notion of the "free state" means that exercising your natural right to have a gun for self-defense obligates you to service in defense of the free state also. The two are not in contradiction with each other.

Requiring conscripted service of people who own guns does not interfere with the right of self-defense to arm yourself. If someone owns a gun but does not contribute to the security of our free state, that person would be choosing to live in a state of nature. But we don't, we live in a free state. Someone who freely chooses to arm themselves, and then chooses to live in a state of nature among the rest of us may be a threat to our common good.

... something like that.

Many people will rush to a snap judgment of this position and say that it falls in one or another "box" on either "side," that it is "pro-guns" or "against the right to bear arms." The reality in 1776 was, your gun was your draft card. The 2nd amendment WAS the founder's compromise on this issue. The 2nd amendment states the general right of the people to bear arms is for the purpose of defending the "security of the free state." Taking guns away from crazies like Jared Loughner is an act of the People defending their own freedom and security, not the other way around; the general right of people to bear arms is not infringed.

And, it works both ways, achieving balance in a democratic way. If people feel threatened, more people will buy guns, and more will be drafted into police or military. If people feel safe, fewer will buy guns, and the police and military will shrink. This is the way they intended for our nation to self-regulate on this issue without needing a dictatorial policy that could only be implemented unfairly.

If we return to what they intended, to draft gun owners into the "well regulated militia," i.e. police, federal law enforcement and military, a lot of the problems surrounding the gun issue would be resolved.

Iran's Ayatollah and President are trying to side with the protestors... hilarious. In Iran, they execute the opposition. Fascism is worse in Iran than in Egypt, but the Iranian government persists in their inside-out propaganda to distract their own people from the people suffering in Iranian prisons for speaking their minds. I pray the Egyptians will choose a government that allows for liberty and change, instead of a backward step into oppression and lies. A fascist Islamic regime is almost worse than a fascist secular regime, because it profanes the name of God as an arbitrary excuse for humans to exercise personal power over others.

I don't generally focus on doctors, since the choice to have an abortion is ultimately the mother's, but this example shows how depraved people can become once the voice of ethics and conscience has been anesthetized: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2011-01-19-abortion-doctor-philadelphia_N.htm

If all military personnel were drafted from a pool of gun-owning citizens like the founders intended, the military could still hold closed-door court for protecting national security, with a jury of military personnel. This would qualify as a jury of peers, since they would all be citizens who do not see themselves as being "special" or "above" the law that the rest of us have to live by.

If a man with a young child commits rape, we go after the man for that act. We do not kill his child, even if we cannot catch the man, and the reasons for that should be obvious to any sane person. Although government is restricted by Roe v. Wade from intruding into your womb, law and ethics are separate things. Ethics are how you interpret and decide things in your own mind. If you don't try to hold them together consistently, your own life suffers and so does that of everyone around you-- lashing out at the innocent for another person's crimes can never be justified.

Exactly. What about a grown-up child of an immigrant brought here as a minor who has Down's Syndrome? Or another mental disability? That person is unworthy of citizenship because they are unable to pursue a higher degree or join the military, though they might be able to hold a productive job living in a group home?

What about kids who were brought here with physical disabilities and can only do the degree? Will they get assistance or are they made disabled debt slaves?

What happens to people who pursue a degree by applying to colleges, but don't succeed on entrance exams? Do they get one shot, or can they study (and work) and try again?

What about someone who pusues a degree but doesn't qualify for student loans and cannot afford tuition? Forced by poverty into war, even if they could pay their own way by working?

There may be answers to these questions in the bill, but the public has not had time to consider these things and reflect on them to their representatives. We should allow the Congress and the People time to do their duty before rushing into an act that provides "throw-away" poor minority soldiers to an elite officers' corps.

You are brilliant. I was never comfortable with the Dream Act. It seemed elitist and arbitrary. For instance I know siblings where one has Downs and the other does not. Placing citizenship worthyness one one and not the other seems unfair.

How can the Somali Islamic community and their leaders in Minneapolis be so "stunned" that their young men institutionalized and profited from the serial rape of a 12-year old girl, in a religion which venerates Muhammad, who married a six-year-old girl Aisha and defiled her when she was nine?

Do you really think they are that ignorant? No. The "leaders" support such acts every day when they call to worship, and the "followers" follow only because they are afraid to speak out.

More Muslim mobs, this time torching houses of Coptic Christians in Egypt because of rumors that one individual had a fling with a Muslim girl: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/16/AR2010111601550.html

This is the great difference between the attitudes of the West and the Islamic world. We believe, and attempt to the best of our ability to enforce, that individuals are responsible for their own actions, not groups which are associated by religion or common interest, and also that individual people should be free to choose how to love one another without fear of violence.

Or this Palestinian man, who has been arrested for his opinions and his satire.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/11/AR2010111104902.html?wprss=rss_world/wires

Many call for his death, in a way that seems a lot like the witch-burning mobs of Salem in the 17th century. We must wake up to the fact that we are facing exactly that in the MAJORITY of Muslims in the world-- a witch-burning mob making decisions based only on fear and ignorance.

Then when we say so, we are accused of being the mob! Do you see how twisted and Orwellian that is? That is why it is becoming obvious that there is a force "behind the curtain" in the fascist Islamic world, which cares nothing for God, but only for power.

Case in point-- Pakistan has sentenced Asia Bibi, a Christian mother of five children, to death, for "blasphemy." (http://www.persecution.org/prisonerfocus/2010/11/10/asia-bibi/) They believe that by offering an innocent human sacrifice to their angry God, they will placate the Taliban, al-Qaeda and other terrorists. They are wrong. No one can placate psychotic murderers, the only result will be more death, more chaos. Jesus Christ is the only hope for the Muslim world.

I really like this Article. I get pretty "snooty" too because I am also fed up with "both sides."

I am a Christian first, a writer by Nature, and an "American" only by the accident of birth. (Three of my grandparents were French Canadian.)

I am also a "middle of the road extemist."

Thank God the next life will be a whole lot better...

Peace,

One has to wonder, in a religion that follows a child molester, but clothes itself in an image of piety, what really goes on behind closed doors? For all the incidents of child abuse by Catholic priests, could it be that child abuse is more thoroughly a part of the institution of Islam than anyone in the Islamic world has the courage to admit and confront? Courage is needed - courage for the children, servants, and others who suffer behind closed doors.

I am simply saying, that those who kill Christians because they wish to stop the spread of Christianity have actually spread the message of peace and redemption that Christ brought into the world. They have only done harm to their own cause.

We live in peace here, too, but it is a more honest peace than Singapore. I respect Muslims, but I disagree with their beliefs. Why is it, that whenever a Christian says what he believes, everyone else says the Christian is pushing their religious beliefs on other people? In Singapore, you are not allowed to say anything that offends other people - which means you are controlled by fear, fear spread by a religion of violence. Your "respect" is forced by fear, which makes you a coward. Your "respect" is dishonest if you do not have enough respect for yourself to take a stand against evil and falsehood.

Muhammad married a six-year-old girl and had sex with her when she was nine. That is wrong. That is an evil person. Anyone who justifies that in the name of God is also evil. Anyone who refuses to speak against this blatant and backward theological and moral error is a coward.

If you say that I am "intolerant" for saying that having sex with children is wrong, that worshiping a man who married and had sex with a child is wrong, and that I should remain silent because it is disagreeable, then you are a coward, and probably a pedophile, who supports the rape of children. There is no way around that.

Anyone claiming to be a Muslim who disclaims the muslim scriptures that call for violence against infidels are as guilty of apostasy against that religion as are those who claim to be Christian but say that Christ wasn't God but was just a nice guy, or that the resurrection of the dead is only an allegory.

The difference is, Christians don't kill people for apostasy anymore, because we've grown up. We have the courage to speak our minds, but we have the mercy and the maturity not force others to believe the same way. We we don't hack peoples' hands off for theft or kill adulterers by stoning, because we are humble enough to acknowledge that we are all sinners, we are all flawed.

We don't put people in jail for chewing gum, hang people for having a drug problem, or beat them for choosing when and where they wish to freely associate peacefully with others, or for stating their own opinions. That's completely crazy. You, sir, are a liar, and a fascist, and your country is fascist. You have no mercy. You are insane. The people of Singapore read a lot, but you understand very little.

I refuse to give up my right to speak freely of my beliefs. No one compelled you to read this website.

You are wrong - Muslims convert to Christianity every day. Beliefs and ideas are thoughts, and thoughts can be exchanged for other thoughts. Nazi Germany, and Islamic Fascism, have taught us the dark side of that coin - that some thoughts can in fact have evil consequences for the world. However, it works both ways - bad thoughts <em>can</em> be exchanged for good ones, in any person, by the grace of God. Muslims are not "born antichrist." The idea that thoughts are fixed and cannot be changed is part of the Fascist lie. Everyone is free to turn their hearts and wills back to God, even those who have committed evil sins in the darkness of their ignorance. Yet no one can be forced to pray to God for revelation. They have to take the first step on their own.

I think you've missed the point entirely. Jesus asks us to forgive them, because they know not what they do. You want the approach of Nebuchadnezzer, but "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." You also might want to study theological philosophers like Teilhard de Chardin, whose basic idea was that when a mind has attained some threshold of knowledge, that knowledge takes a life of its own, and leads one toward God. Human beings are human beings, no matter what color or nationality they are. Education in Afghanistan can save them, and so can Christ! Beating someone over the head, or trying to kill them, is not going to convince them that you are right.

Afghanistan is a blight on the world. The Islamo-fascist radicals must be stopped, disarmed or sent to meet Allah in person. The poppy fields must be permanently destroyed and the ground contaminated so that nothing will ever grow there to be sure. The horror and travesty of that region of thieves and murderers must end. If Christians won't do it, God bless whoever does. All Hail King Jesus!

[1 John:2- 22]...
Who is [such a] liar as he who denies that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah) ? He is the Antichrist, who denies and refuses to acknowledge the Father and the Son...........

If you remember the story from Bible about... Izaak & Ishmael they came from same father Abraham....But Ismael nation will always stand against Christianity.

Please Christian,,Churches,,Evangelist,,specially Governments from all over the World understand or realize this,,That you can preach Gospel to Gentiles. But not to Antichrist..As they are born Antichrist how could you change them,Let me quote you another proof that as soon as their (Muslim) Imam Mehdi arrive they will be commanded to slaughter every Christian and Jew in the Universe....GOD Bless the one martyred in Jesus...
